Sandhoe Residents' concerns - prior to the launch of the Operating Permit consultation period - January 9th 2008.

These concerns have been communicated to Nick Barrett (TDC Head of Health Protection) in advance of his launch of the public consultation.

1. What, in layman's terms, does the Permit mean?
2. What are the principal differences between the old permit and the new one?
3. What improvements will residents see in terms of noise reduction, given that following the new development and change of production layout, the extremely noisy external log-handling process is now within earshot of a significant number of residential neighbours and for more than six months has almost continuously disrupted many people's sleep patterns?  Will the Permit seek to eliminate this source of noise?
4. Compliance with the Permit - assuming that it addresses the concerns of residents and allows Egger to operate to commercial advantage - how will it be assured?
5. Will the Permit continue to govern Egger's operations following local government reorganisation and will there be any changes in how the Permit is monitored?
6. Does the Operating Permit lay down measurement criteria governing the pollution factors and if so are these fixed for the term of the OP or will the Council insist that BATNEC philosophy shall apply which means that improvements should be enforced as they occur?
7. In order to reduce noise impact during the night will the permit include for day shift operation only of the flaker/log handling unit?
